Refers to the risk of causing additional reflux. Does not factor in acidity that might aggravate irritation.
Some foods contain substances that can trigger acid reflux, like coffee, alcohol, and garlic.
However, not every person reacts the same way to these foods. That is why we classify foods based on their likelihood to trigger acid reflux.
The pH scale measures acidity from 0 (most acidic) to 14 (most alkaline). A pH of 7 is neutral.
Generally, with heartburn, foods with a pH below 4 should be avoided.
With laryngopharyngeal reflux, things are more strict: foods with a pH below 5 should be avoided.
