Silent reflux, also known medically as laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR), is a form of reflux in which stomach contents reach the throat, larynx, or airways. There, silent reflux causes symptoms such as hoarseness, chronic cough, breathing difficulties, a feeling of a lump in the throat (globus sensation), or constant throat clearing. Since these signs are often subtle and can be confused with other conditions, silent reflux frequently remains undetected for a long time.
Diagnosing silent reflux can be challenging and sometimes requires specialized tests. The treatment often resembles that of classic reflux, with lifestyle changes and dietary adjustments playing a particularly important role.
